How to use Continent Maps

Explore and practice the countries of the world, continent by continent, with an interactive map.

Written by Maarten

Continent Maps is an interactive way to explore the world, one continent at a time: its countries, capital cities, bodies of water and mountain ranges. You can use it in two modes: Explore to freely look around, or Practice to test students’ knowledge with exercises.

How it works:

  1. Open Continent Maps from the library, or find it in the tools menu under Lesson builders.

  2. Go to Settings to choose your options:

    • Mode:

      • Explore to freely click and view features.

      • Practice to start exercises like “Find Ireland on the map.”

    • Continent: Choose Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania or South America.

    • Region: Show the whole continent or select a smaller region, such as Polynesia.

    • Geographical features: Show countries, capital cities, bodies of water or mountain ranges.

    • Names: Decide if names are shown by default or only revealed when clicked.

  3. Click Save to begin.

Explore mode:

  • Zoom in or out with the +/- buttons or pinch with your fingers.

  • Drag the map to move around when you are zoomed in.

  • Use the legend in the top left to see which features are shown, and the mini-map in the top right to see where you are.

  • Click on a country to display its name. Click again to hide it.

Practice mode:

  • Choose the number of exercises in Settings before starting.

  • A question bar will appear, for example: “Find Ireland on the map.” The counter on the left shows how far along you are.

  • Click the location to answer. If incorrect, try again.

  • Click Show answer to reveal it and continue to the next exercise.

💡Tip: Combine Continent Maps with Country Maps. Let students find a country on its continent first, then open Country Maps to zoom in on its regions, cities and rivers.
